Right up till today I thought survivors guilt did not exsist in my life, I would go so far as to say I did not even feel it existed at all, today is a hard day. For sure a wave of oppression is and has been on me today, I am using all my trix in positive thinking. It’s all in vein though, I just feel like it’s an impossible task to pull myself out of the deep sinking sand. I have seen a couple of people on my Facebook of late grieving their lost ones, it has made me feel guilt. Guilt that I wish there was someway to take their greif from them. Asking questions like “why did I survive” “nothing special about me” I am struggling to exsplain how I feel but I will give it my best shot.
You see I am learning how human I am, how I am not this indistructable person that’s untouchable. I have feelings and my compassion for others is just so huge it makes me tired, I just feel an over whelming feeling to support people. I have made allot of friends on the Internet, male and female. Some I have never met but those feelings of compassion are no smaller for them than for the ones I know well. You see I know what it’s like to suffer. People say sentences to me like “your the strongest person I know” “your amazing how you have coped” you see I don’t think so. I know how much emotion I feel, which has now become compassion that is endless. But as a human, I see others that did not make it. How that makes me feel is very deep.
The only way I know to exspress what I feel.
You see they were not weaker or any less determined than I, it’s just they did not make it and I did. Their life was just as important as mine is. So why did I survive, it’s just not fair, it makes me think how their families must feel. I just wish there was some way I could help them overcome that. Such a hard blog this, but I am just trying to get across to everyone that’s survived it’s normal to feel like this. It’s a form of greif what we feel as survivors. You can’t feel this depth of grief unless you have suffered anything where you have had to fight for your life. The depth just will not be there, the feeling of sorry you feel is beyond anything I have ever felt. You want to take it from them because you know how much it hurts.
You know something else. The one sentence that has wound me up more than any other is “at least it’s treatable” what about the ones that did not survive what I have. Did they just give up and not fight, no way it’s bullshit, of course they fought. Cancer took them though but not me, why? One question I have never asked while fighting cancer is “why me” but I am asking it now. Not “why me” as in why did I get it. But why did I survive where others didn’t. All I can say is, I will continue to document how I feel so others know that it’s normal. So that others know you are not alone, so many men do not read what I write because how it will make them feel. Others don’t write how they feel, how will the world know what it’s like and be encouraged to carry on unless we tell people how it is.
Cancer does not stop affecting us because we don’t have it physically, I would say that it makes no differance as to the pain level. It’s just instead of physical it becomes, compassion towards all people. I would be really interested to know if this makes sense to you? I am not going to re read just post.
I hope your well and also compassionate in recovery,

Living with survivors guilt affects me each and every day. Sadly?
I should be “celebrating” 10years of beating a disease that has unfortunately claimed the lives of thousands. Why did I survive? Inner strength? Luck? Who knows.
Initially I went through a euphoric “feck I’m still alive”, but as the years go by I miss the life I used to have because of the impact of my brain injury. The loss of brain functions has been crippling at times. I wish I could forget the negatives and focus of the positives once more. Being positive is a lot more fun than the dull ache of negativity and depression. That is why I keep coming back to this wonderful blog for hope and inspiration.
Keep on blogging Mark. Regards to all your family. xxx

Eric, u made me emotional. Why because you consider my thoughts and experiences useful. So why did that make me emotional. Because it means that my suffering has helped you. That what I have suffered has maybe helped to make you see a positive in you day. That’s awesome. Thanks for telling me how it’s affecting you. It means a lot. 😊

The survivor’s guilt is real and can be truly overwhelming. I cope with it by telling myself that we simply cannot know or understand why some of us are here and why we have lost so many. Yes, we fight every day, but yes, those we lost fought just as hard. For me, I believe there has to be some reason, but one I will never know in this lifetime. This is such a poignant topic and I relate to much of what you’re experiencing. Thank you for writing about it.

There are some questions that come up in our lives that are unanswerable. I think this is one of them. That doesn’t stop us from wondering why though. Just keep writing and encouraging and sharing your experience. You may never know who you are writing for, but they will.
Best Wishes always.
